What Is Nipple Reduction Surgery?

Nipple reduction is a relatively quick, safe surgical procedure that reduces the size of one or both nipples to improve their appearance. It can shorten both nipple length and reduce width, creating more balance between the nipple and areola. Dr. Ortiz may perform this procedure as a standalone surgery using only a local anesthetic or combine it with breast augmentation or a breast lift.

It is important to note that nipple reduction is not the same as areola reduction. The areola is the darkened area of skin around the nipple. Nipple reduction only addresses the projection and width of the nipple, although areola reduction may be performed at the same time.

How Is Nipple Reduction Surgery Performed?

Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Juan A. Ortiz, uses either a wedge or flap technique. With the wedge technique, your surgeon removes a wedge-shaped piece of the nipple and attaches the remaining sides together, creating a smaller projection. If using the flap technique, the surgeon makes an incision around the nipple’s base at the desired projection level, leaving a small portion attached. He removes excess tissue and turns down the flap to create a smaller nipple.

Recovery After Nipple Reduction Surgery

Even though you may experience tenderness, swelling, bruising, and some discomfort while healing, most patients don’t need to take time off work after the procedure. Usually, swelling resolves after a week, but it can take up to 6 weeks to heal fully.

During this time, your surgeon may recommend wearing a specialized surgical bra to protect your nipples. You’ll also need to avoid strenuous activity. We’ll remove stitches if needed about 1 week after your surgery.
