Many women have concerns about the size and shape of their labia but find it difficult to talk about. At North Raleigh Plastic Surgery, our compassionate board-certified plastic surgeons, including female plastic surgeon Dr. Kimberly Jones, can make discussing your concerns more comfortable. They perform labiaplasty for women from Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and throughout North Carolina.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty reduces the size or length of the labia minora, the inner portion of the labia so that it does not hang below the labia majora, the outer portion. Even though it’s considered a cosmetic procedure, many women experience physical pain and discomfort from enlarged inner labia, which may twist, tug, or irritate sensitive tissues during physical activity, including sex.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

Our surgeons use one of two labiaplasty techniques, depending on the patient’s unique situation.

Trim Labiaplasty

The trim technique is the most common surgical method for labiaplasty. This approach involves an incision that removes the outer edge of the inner labia, making the inner labia even with the outer labia (or slightly receded). It trims away the darkest part of the labia. For many women, removing the darker edge is one of the cosmetic reasons they choose to have labiaplasty.

Wedge Labiaplasty

The wedge technique is a newer alternative to trim labiaplasty. It involves your plastic surgeon removing a V-shaped “wedge” from both sides of the labia and stitching the remaining edges together. This technique makes the area smaller and within the outer labia.

Recovery After Labiaplasty

You can expect to experience some swelling and discomfort after your surgery. Most patients can return to work and engage in light activity within a week. We recommend waiting up to 6 weeks before having sexual intercourse. Labiaplasty may be performed alone or as part of a mommy makeover or menopause makeover.

Is Labiaplasty Right for You?

If you feel that the size of your labia is affecting your physical or emotional well-being, labiaplasty may be the right solution for you. Many women who undergo this procedure report that the surgery minimizes inflammation, chafing, and dryness and allows them to experience more pleasure and confidence during sexual activity.

The right candidates for this procedure are women who are in overall good health without conditions that may increase the risks of surgery. It’s also important not to smoke or use products containing nicotine, as they can cause complications with healing.
