What is Scar Revision?
Scars are part of the body’s healing process after a wound and are formed when the dermis, the middle layer of skin, is damaged. As part of the healing process, the body forms new collagen fibers to repair the damage. These new collagen fibers have a different texture and quality than the surrounding tissue, resulting in a scar.
Since no two scars are the same, scar revision surgeries are customized to the patient’s needs. There are several scar revision techniques and your procedure may utilise a combination of these techniques. If the scar is depressed into the skin, a steroid-based compound or dermal filler may be used to raise the area so it is flush with the surrounding skin. This treatment is temporary and lasts anywhere from a few months to a few years. For scars on the top layers of skin, surface treatments like microdermabrasion or laser therapy may be effective. Deeper scars require a technique called layered closure. This involves excising the scar and closing each layer of tissue and skin with absorbable sutures, resulting in a less conspicuous scar than the original one. Skin grafting may be necessary if there is not enough healthy skin in the area after the excision.
