As we age, our skin, especially on the face, loses elasticity. This can cause both the upper and lower eyelids to sag, making people appear older, perpetually tired, or even interfere with vision. Some patients also have excess fat around their eyes, making them look puffy. Blepharoplasty surgery corrects this by removing any excess fat and skin from around the eyelids, leaving a smoother, younger-looking appearance. If the area around your eyes makes it difficult to see or you feel self-conscious as a result, eyelid surgery, also known as an eye lift, can help.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgeries are customized to meet the patient’s needs. You may need treatment on both the upper and lower eyelids, or you may want surgery on just your upper or lower lids. During an upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the natural curve of your eyelid from the inner corner to the outside corner. Excess fat and skin are removed through the incision and it is closed with small sutures. The process is similar for a lower eyelift, although during this procedure, an incision may be made in the inside of the eyelid.
Since all incisions are made to follow the contour of your eyelid and extremely small sutures are used to close incisions, scarring is minimal. Results from an upper eyelid surgery typically last 5-7 years while a lower eye lift is practically permanent. Many people choose to pair an eye lift with other procedures like a brow lift or face lift.
