Dr. Juan Ortiz is an accomplished, double board-certified plastic surgeon with nearly 2 decades of surgical experience and a remarkable career trajectory. A native of Puerto Rico, where his mother, a registered nurse, inspired his pursuit of a medical career, Dr. Ortiz established his Raleigh, North Carolina, plastic surgery practice after serving as Chief of Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Womack Army Medical Center. Dr. Ortiz has performed thousands of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures and is recognized nationally and internationally by his colleagues.

Dr. Ortiz graduated magna cum laude and as a distinguished military graduate from the University of Puerto Rico before attending Ponce School of Medicine, where he was honored as a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Election to the AOA is a lifelong honor that signifies a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service.
Following medical school, Dr. Ortiz completed a five-year general surgery residency and served as a staff general surgeon in Fort Hood, Texas. He recognized his passion for transforming patients’ lives and pursued further specialization by completing a plastic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the North Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

His training and clinical work have included caring for patients with trauma-related injuries, breast reconstruction needs, burn care, extremity reconstruction, and craniofacial conditions across respected institutions such as the Memphis Regional Medical Center, VA hospitals, and leading children’s hospitals.
In addition to his hands-on surgical expertise, Dr. Ortiz has held leadership and research roles that reflect his commitment to advancing patient care. He previously served as Director of Breast Reconstruction Surgery Services at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital and was a principal investigator in a clinical outcomes study focused on advanced breast reconstruction techniques. As a current case reviewer for the North Carolina Medical Board, he continues to contribute to maintaining high standards of safety, ethics, and excellence in plastic surgery.

During his time in the U.S. Army, he held critical leadership positions, including Chief of Surgery at a combat support hospital in Afghanistan and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Womack Army Medical Center. In these roles, he cared for patients in high-pressure environments where precision, adaptability, and sound judgment were essential.
